Sleep disruption does not always look like lying awake for hours. You may fall asleep at your usual time but wake more often, sleep less deeply, or need another coffee the next morning. That feedback loop is why tracking the clock as well as the milligrams is useful.
Pay attention to the pattern rather than a single poor night. A late dinner, work stress, travel and an irregular wake time can all affect sleep. For 10 to 14 days, write down your total caffeine, the time of your final serving, bedtime, wake-ups and how refreshed you feel in the morning. Keep your wake time steady where possible. Change one thing first: move the final drink earlier, reduce a late pre-workout, or swap one afternoon serving for a caffeine-free alternative. A simple log makes it easier to see what is helping.
Do not compensate for a rough night by pushing the next day’s caffeine higher and later. Have a regular meal, get daylight and movement early, and use the smallest amount that gets the job done. A dose that works on a well-rested day is often lower than the amount you reach for after several short nights.
A gradual reduction is usually easier to live with than a sudden stop. Trim one serving or reduce one scoop, keep that change for several days, then reassess. The goal is a routine that gives you useful daytime alertness without borrowing from the night that follows.
Where evening supplements fit, and where they do not
